Commercial Van Safety

How do commercial vans stack up?

Over 35 vans tested so far…

Commercial vans operate on our roads with increased levels of exposure - interacting with passenger cars, motorcycles, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians. For drivers of commercial vans, these vehicles serve as their mobile workplace. Having a robust level of protection for the driver and other road users is essential.

To help fleet operators, businesses and private consumers make informed van purchasing decisions, we’ve put the safety of commercial vans to the test using a grading system.

This specialised assessment is different to our traditional star rating approach. Our safety gradings focus on the availability and effectiveness of active (collision avoidance) safety systems, including low and high-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane support systems (LSS), blind spot monitoring (BSM), speed assistance systems (SAS), and occupant detection systems including driver monitoring systems (DMS) and intelligent seatbelt reminders.

An overall performance grading of PLATINUM, GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE, BASIC, or NOT RECOMMENDED is awarded to each van.

Functionality of each collision avoidance feature is independently tested. During testing, each van is loaded to half of its carry capacity – a typical load for a commercial van in daily use.

The performance of each safety feature – whether fitted as Standard or Optional - is assessed as either GOOD, ADEQUATE, MARGINAL, WEAK or POOR based on established scoring criteria.

Destructive crash testing does not currently form part of ANCAP’s commercial van assessments.

The Commercial Van assessment protocols can be viewed here.

* The results from this analysis do not replace or alter existing ANCAP safety (star) ratings or contributing scores of vans, where rated.
